Fitness
Week 6/10- 12/10:For Two Great Causes!
FITNESS
WEEK IS COMING…
Healthworks Fitness Centres are extremely proud to be
one of the sponsors of Fitness Week, an extremely worthwhile
campaign organised in an effort to raise the awareness
of the importance of health and fitness within the community.
This event will introduce some wonderful opportunities
for members of the general public to sample what the
modern day fitness industry has to offer.
During this campaign, the public are able to register
at a participating gym (such as Healthworks) for just
$10! This small amount will entitle the buyer to a card
which gives them FIVE visits at the participating fitness
centre of their choice. A percentage of each $10 spent,
goes directly to the National Heart Foundation and
Diabetes Australia. This investment by the consumer
provides a great way to understand what the industry
has to offer prior to committing to a membership. However,
there is even more incentive to come and try Healthworks
out! Provided the card holder has a minimum of three
visits stamped off their card, they will go into the
draw to win a fabulous brand new car (make yet to be
advised), plus many other incentives on offer that week.
The visits must be used by 19th October 2003. There
will be many exciting events surrounding Fitness Week,
so keep your eyes peeled and ears primed.
Here
are a few reasons to try Healthworks as one of the sponsors,
Osteopathy:
Structural and functional integrity Of The Body!
Osteopathy
is an established recognised system of diagnosis and
treatment, which lays its main emphasis on the structural
and functional integrity of the body. It is distinctive
by the fact that it recognises that much of the pain
and disability which we suffer stems from abnormalities
in the function of the body structure as well as damage
caused to it by disease.
What
kinds of problems can osteopathy help with?
Whilst back pain is the most common problem seen, osteopathy
can help with a wide varied of problems including changes
to posture in pregnancy, babies with colic or sleeplessness,
repetitive strain injury, postural problems caused by
driving or work strain, children with glue ear, the
pain of arthritis and sports injuries among many others.
What
can I expect when I visit an osteopath?
When you visit an osteopath for the first time a full
case history will be taken and you will be given an
examination. You will normally be asked to remove some
of your clothing and to perform a simple series of movements.
The osteopath will then use a highly developed sense
of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of
weakness or excessive strain throughout the body.
The osteopath may need additional investigations such
as x-rays (although most of the time this is not necessary).
This will allow a full diagnosis and suitable treatment
plan to be developed for you.
Treatment
usually involves some soft tissue stretching, joint
mobilization to gently increase a range of motion and
on occasions manipulation. Some exercises or stretches
may be given as "homework" to further assist in a patient's
recovery.
Osteopaths will assess the whole body to find the cause
of a complaint rather than just treat the current symptoms,
thus enabling greater resolution of an injury or pain.
The West End Osteopathic Clinic has been providing
complementary health care to Brisbane for over a decade.
Osteopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare encompassing
"hands-on" techniques to improve movement, reduce pain
and encourage positive health changes by an individual.

So set aside 3 minutes RIGHT NOW to read the following
article and then implement the strategies, it's that
simple! The results start when you do.
Fully Functioning Abdominal Fibers! If you have
been enlightened with our previous articles you would
have found the following to be true:
-
If you want you abdominal muscles to show you need
to lose body fat
-
Everybody has a six pack! Sometimes it just a little
hidden!
-
Although your six pack (Rectus Abdominus) gets the
most attention, there are other main parts that need
to be emphasized
-
There are 3 main parts top your abdominals, these
being your Rectus Abdominus, your Oblique musculature
and your Transverse Abdominals
Today's Peakology gives you some simple strategies
to have all 3 abdominal muscles in top shape!
- Rectus
Abdominus: your Rectus Abdominus is easily stimulated
via any movement whereas you flex your trunk (roll
your chest towards your hips). As you can see, even
by doing this whilst you are sitting behind your PC
chair or, better still, on your Swiss ball you can
consciously activate these particular muscles. Now,
we need to add some resistance and typically your
bodyweight is the easiest from of resistance you can
have. Try this: lying on the floor, Place a rolled
up towel or folded pillow / cushion under your lower
back, bend the knees with the feet on the floor, hands
on the opposite shoulders & tongue on the roof of
the mouth. Now "Roll" your chest towards your hips
and describe the sensation.
- Oblique
musculature: Your Oblique Musculature is active
in many planes of motion, however to successfully
isolate them and understand their role and activation
simply do the following: lie on your side, have something
comfortable supporting your elbow (a small pillow
is fine). Now, place your elbow under your shoulder
( as if you are going to bear weight on it). Using
your feet (on their side and locked together), your
knees and finally, your elbows as supporting mechanisms,
simply raise your hips off the floor as high as you
can. You should feel the activation of the muscles
down the side of your body closest to the floor.
- Transverse
Abdominals: these muscles are in a class of their
own and require a full explanation on how to successfully
activate and utilize. To feel the role of your TVA,
simply lie on your stomach, holding your hands in
front of your chest, using your feet, knees and elbows
as anchor points, simply lift your hips off the floor.
At this stage, activate your TVA by drawing your belly
button to your spine. If you have successfully mastered
the movement you should find a "flattening" of the
midsection and the energy drawn into the abdominals
at the front as opposed to the muscles of the lower
back.
If you are unsure on how to do any of these exercises
(and many more), why not have one of the 11 highly
skilled Peak Physique trainers show you through the
best Abdominal workout you have ever had!

DANDRUFF
Dandruff is the unattractive flaking of skin on the
scalp which occurs whenever the skin cells grow abnormally
fast. These flakes are small and either white or grey.
Studies have shown that dandruff is often linked with
an inadequate diet and inefficient carbohydrate metabolism.
It can also be triggered by an excess of sugar; deficiencies
of essential fatty acids and poor digestion. Dandruff
is often a symptom of another disorder, such as seborrheic
dermatitis, an inflammatory scaling disease primarily
of the scalp and face. This results from sebaceous glands
that have become overactive. Emotional traumas, illness,
or hormonal imbalance can aggravate and worsen seborrheic
dermatitis.
DANDRUFF Dietary Suggestions
Eliminate sugar from the diet, including foods containing
sugar. Starchy, devitalised, refined and processed foods
also add to the cause of this problem. Avoid excess
bread, biscuits, cake and all sweet or starchy foods,
confectionery and beverages. Do not use medicated shampoos.
Although they may give temporary relief, the condition
usually returns worse. Use a mild jojoba or herbal shampoo
regularly. Massage rosemary oil into the scalp.

Laughter
is the best medicine!
With
some misgivings, we left a young baby-sitter in charge
of our three energetic youngsters. When we returned
a few, hours later, she was sitting alone watching TV.
I went to check on the children, and found them in our
narrow hallway. By bracing their arms and legs against
the walls, two of them had climbed up to the ceiling.
"The baby-sitter taught us how," they said gleefully.
The sitter joined me, her face a deep red. "Since they
had me climbing the walls, I figured they might as well
be too," she stammered.
Quote
of the month!
Excellence
is an art won by training and habituation. We do not
act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but
rather we have those because we have acted rightly.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not
an act but a habit
