The
Importance of Natural Detoxing For Robust Health, Vibrant
Energy and Sensational Well being: by My Health Sanctuary!
Many
people have asked me '… why do I need to detox?..' In
a modern world we are exposed to a large number of toxins.
These come in the form of chemicals, pesticides, radiation,
paints, home insect sprays, unnatural body products
& many others.
Our body's physiology is no different from those of
our ancestors, who lived in relatively unpolluted natural
environments. In these traditional communities there
was no/little pollution, no chemicals, no toxins & none
of the daily modern day types of stress. So biologically
we have not developed mechanisms to release unassisted,
accumulated toxins in our body
Today many folk struggle with ill health, low work productivity,
chronic disease, depression, fatigue, low libido & supposedly
many other medically untreatable conditions.
Clinical Research into the validity of Natural Medicine
& Environmental Medicine is showing that many of these
conditions can be due to the accumulation of toxins
in the tissues & organs of our bodies.
So, just as you need to clean out your cars carburettor
& tune its motor for optimum functioning, you also you
need to detoxify your body regularly in order to be
healthy.
Detoxing the bowel, liver & kidneys along with the hormonal
system & thyroid gland can revive your energy, help
you with weight loss, improve your fertility & libido
& increase your work productivity!
A supervised Detoxification program with your Natural
Health Care professional can go a really long way to
accomplishing this goal!!

What's
in a GOOD Skine Care Routine? by Clinic Aesthetic!
We
have all been told at one time or another that we should
be using an effective skin care range to 'prevent the
signs of ageing'. But how do you know who to believe
and which ads or so called science is actually scientific.
So which factors need to be considered before putting
together a good skin care routine?
Many years ago the adage of 'Cleanse Tone and Moisturise'
was heard over and over and many men and women followed
this advice to a 'T'. Advice from skin care professionals
in general hasn't changed. What has changed is that
today through research and clinical trials our ability
to predict how our skin is going to age has been made
easier. There are some key factors that immediately
influence how our skin will age, those being:
genetic factors - your natural skin type. Pale
skin colours will age more quickly than those darker.
environmental
factors -exposure to sun, wind and amount of time
spent exposed to these factors
external
factors - smoking or drinking alcohol
number
of birthdays you have had
Ok, so now we are more knowledgeable about the factors
that will age our skin, how do we help maintain our
skins appearance and in turn help delay the ageing process?
Four key components in our skin care routines need to
be observed: Exfoliate, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Sun
Protection
Exfoliate
The best exfoliants are AHA's or Alpha Hydroxy Acids
and the most non-irritating of these is L-Latic Acid.
This will exfoliate surface dead skin cells, increase
the rate of cell turnover and decongest the skins surface.
Lactic Acid occurs naturally in our skin for hydration
and breaks down any excess naturally. The main benefit
of a good exfoliant is that the skin is better prepared
to be able to absorb active ingredients. You will see
an increase in clarity and your skin will feel firmer
and more hydrated.
Be careful of products with an exfoliant called Glycolic
Acid, as this is a product not naturally occurring in
the skin and can be more irritating. Overuse of a product
containing Glycolic Acid may result in a 'rebound' allergic-type
reaction.
Vitamin C
A potent antioxidant helps reduce inflammation, redness
and swelling. Vitamin C increases the water content
in the dermis and also increases the skin's ability
to heal. In terms of helping to fight the signs of ageing
Vitamin C increases new collagen synthesis.
Vitamin A
This amazing ingredient is capable of penetrating the
dermis and is a potent active ingredient. L-Retinol
(a pure form of Vitamin A) binds to the nucleus of the
cell protecting it and is a potent antioxidant. Vitamin
A encourages cell exfoliation and best of all inhibits
collagen breakdown and ageing. L-Retinol stimulates
the formation of healthy blood vessels, reduces excess
melanin in the skin (the cause of age spots and pigmentation)
and regulates excess oil production. Remember to look
for L-Retinol in your skin care routine.
Sun Protection
A non-negotiable part of every skin care routine has
to be a sun protection product. Talk to your skin care
professional about the benefits of a good sun protection
product. Hint: don't forget to apply to the backs of
your hands - one of the first places to show ageing!
Unwanted ingredients
Keep an eye out for those unwanted ingredients called
parabens. These are commonly listed as sodium lauryl
sulphate, butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben,
propylparaben. Skin care products containing parabens
can commonly leave your skin feeling dry and often lead
to skin breakouts.

Conquer
Anxiety to Fight IBS Pain: by Peter McMahon from Hypnotherapy
Queensland!
Pain
is one of the symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel
Syndrome (IBS). This manifests itself in the form of
stomach cramps, which the patient experiences. These
stomach cramps are often accompanied by an urgent need
to empty the bowels. To identify how anxiety can increase
pain in IBS sufferers, we will first of all look at
how anxiety can cause pain in the body in general.
Anxiety and Pain
Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation
between anxiety and pain. This is because of the 'fight
or flight' response, in which the body places itself
in a heightened state of alert in order to deal with
perceived threats of danger. This means that the body
becomes more receptive to physical sensations.
Therefore, the feeling of pain can be more intense.
So, for example, people with anxiety often experience
headaches or the discomfort of taut muscles. Another
aspect of the fight or flight syndrome is that because
the body is putting all its resources into tackling
perceived danger, it shuts down other systems such as
the pain response.
Anxiety and IBS
Studies have shown that emotions such as anger, anxiety
and excitement can increase muscle movement in the stomach.
Additionally, the stomach muscles become taut when a
person is anxious. This results in stomach cramps in
IBS patients.
In order to counter the pain caused by Irritable Bowel
Syndrome, it is important to treat anxiety. There are
many methods of doing this, including hypnosis and Cognitive
Behaviour Therapy.
Reducing Anxiety
Research has also shown that when people were instructed
to relax into hypnosis, their digestive system slowed
down considerably. Other studies have shown that muscle
activity in the stomach decreases when a person is coaxed
into a state of happiness through hypnosis. Further
studies demonstrated that it was possible to control
the level of stomach acid production whilst under hypnosis.
Hypnosis can take several forms including relaxation,
meditation and visualisation.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT is another method which is used for the effective
treatment of pain in IBS patients. With this form of
treatment the patient is encouraged to keep a diary
in which he records all of his negative thoughts whenever
they occur for a period of a few weeks. He then has
to identify any physical feelings that he experiences
because of these negative thoughts such as palpitations.
The next step in the CBT technique is to counter the
negative thoughts with positive ones. The idea of this
is that the patient will eventually replace the negative
thoughts with automatic positive thoughts. In the case
of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this also means that he
should experience less of the physical aspects of the
condition, such as pain and stomach cramps accompanied
by diarrhoea.
Of course conventional medicine can also be used for
pain, but it masks the problem rather than changing
the situation. Some painkillers can also have harmful
or addictive properties if taken regularly whereas hypnosis
and CBT are harmless and actually improve a person's
mental state, leaving them more positive and able to
cope with everyday challenges. Anti-depressants and
sedatives are also used for the treatment of anxiety
but these can also be addictive.
Although hypnosis doesn't work in all instances (mainly
because patients are frightened to let themselves go)
the current success rates are at least 80%. Additionally,
the beneficial effects have been proven to last for
a year or more after treatment. Furthermore, hypnosis
techniques can be combined with Cognitive Behaviour
Therapy in the treatment of IBS. Hypnosis strengthens
the effects of CBS as CBT relies on thought alone to
change a patient's mental state from negative to positive,
whereas certain hypnosis techniques are more objective
and involve feelings as well as thoughts. So, if we
combine both forms of treatment, the results are even
more impressive.

A Surprising
New Way to Burn Fat Quickly:by Maggi Cameron from Bio
Beauty!
Losing
weight often feels like an impossible challenge. I have
evaluated numerous fad diets over the years and frequently
the results have been disappointing.
The reason why most diets fail is that they impose unrealistic
restrictions on your lifestyle. Some diets advocate
eating a lot of protein while others emphasize carbohydrates.
In either case, you have to make drastic changes to
what food you eat, when and how you eat it. All this
diet talk prompted me to take an in-depth look at a
new and 'healthy' weight loss system that is like nothing
ever seen before based on plant-based polysaccharides
to reduce leptin.
What is Leptin? You may or may not have heard
of a hormone called 'leptin'. It was discovered in 1994
and scientists now know that it is the body's most dominant
hormone. Leptin is known as the King of Hormones, it
controls virtually everything that takes place in the
body i.e. thyroid function, weight management, heart
health, mental capability, immunity, inflammation, stress
and reproduction. These functions are all leptin dependant.
Leptin is produced in white adipose (fat) tissue, making
stored fat cells an endocrine gland, like thyroid or
adrenals. Recent scientific studies have shown that
Leptin is the single most important factor in preventing
obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Since 1994 scientists have been looking for the next
miracle pharmaceutical drug. When leptin was given to
mice they lost weight but this did not translate to
humans. The reason? Mice don't make leptin! Yet 99.9%
of overweight humans make too much leptin! In study
after study, researchers have seen significant lower
leptin levels result in weight loss, fat loss and improved
health. The question was how to safely reduce leptin
levels.
What does Leptin Do? Once leptin is released
from fat it enters the blood and travels to the brain,
delivering a message as to how much fuel (fat cells)
the body has on hand. When the brain receives the message,
it tells the body how fast (or how slow) to run metabolism
based on how much gas is in the tank. In a way leptin
can be compared to fuel in your car. You have no way
to see how much fuel is in your tank - you rely on the
fuel gauge before filling up. Many overweight people
have a faulty leptin gauge.
Fat Loss using Plant-based Polysaccharides: Last
year US based company Mandura released a product based
on 100% polysaccharides and free fatty acids that reduces
leptin and causes weight loss (especially around the
torso). The formula was based on the premise that these
polysaccharides provide the body with essential sugars(glyconutrients)
necessary to health. They aid cardio vascular health
- blood sugar levels, reduce triglycerides; inflammation
and FAT CELLS - by turning off the 'Get Fat Switch'
and altering the brain's sensitivity to leptin to reduce
fat cells and increase metabolism. Research into the
effects of plant-based polysaccharides on the immune
system and cellular communication is in progress.
Double Blind Trial: Scientific trials have just
been completed by the University of Connecticut with
excellent results. Dr. William Kraemer, PhD Director
of the research laboratory said "We looked at the
results after a very intensive 60 day clinical study.
The most profound findings were (1) a significant, rapid
reduction in body fat, (2) body weight was reduced,
and (3) the torso area was reduced, which is significant
in many health-related issues. Very effective changes
were noticed over the 60 day period, that could be continued
over a long period of time." The double blind trial
results are:
o An average weight loss of 9kg in 8 weeks
o An average fat reduction of 7.35%
o Average reduction of 10cm from waist; 8.3 cm from
hips; 3cm from each thigh
o Increased lean muscle (from Adiponectin)
o Reduced triglycerides (aids artery/ heart health)
o Reduced internal inflammation (eases aching joints
)
o 42% drop in Leptin (high levels prevent fat loss)
The Trim group had 90% more fat loss than the placebo
group
Mandura makes two significant products. One is called
Trim based on all natural, 100% plant derived polysaccharides
with no side effects or stimulants. It contains no sugar,
salt, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg or
preservatives. The other product is a nutritional beverage
based on equal quantities of the worlds most exotic
and nutritional fruits - Acai berry, Mangosteen, Durian
and Blueberry. There are no preservatives due to the
advanced bottling process and the packaging is environmentally
friendly. Both products are suitable for vegans
Although we were impressed by the double blind trial
and began to hear of the many success stories reported
by people around the globe, we decided that this weight
loss program was worthy of closer examination. We wanted
to find out for ourselves if these products could do
everything they claimed. Most of the success stories
talked about combining Trim with the Beverage to achieve
maximum weight loss. The idea behind combining the products
is that while the Trim causes weight loss and increases
energy; the beverage helps to provide nutrition and
allows your body to work and burn calories more efficiently.
The ingredients also help to produces sound sleep. We
found it of particular interest that people had not
significantly changed their current lifestyles. We got
a volunteer who had a heart condition so couldn't exercise
and her diet was not the best. She had been advised
to lose 15 kilos for her health. Here is what she had
to say:-
"I couldn't believe how easy it was. I didn't change
my diet or my daily routine, but the fat melted off
like it butter from the first week. I had more energy,
no cravings, and no bloating - only weight loss. I love
this stuff! Finally, a weightloss program that works."
The Results:
Week
1: After one week on Trim and Mandura Beverage,
I was surprised at the results. My energy level was
up, and I wasn't even hungry. I discovered a welcome
side effect of the Trim is its power to curb the appetite.
I honestly feel marvellous. Best of all, I didn't change
anything about my daily routine. On Day 7, my clothes
were already feeling loose. I got on the scale and couldn't
believe my eyes. I had lost 3.5 kilos. Still I wanted
to wait and see the results in the upcoming weeks. But
it was very encouraging!
Week 2: I started the week off with increased
energy, and experienced sound sleep. I was no longer
waking up during the night and tossing and turning because
my body was actually able to relax. I lost another 3
kilos, putting me at an unbelievable 6.5 kilos of weight
loss, in just 2 weeks. I found myself being selective
about my food choices. I no longer craved chocolate
or McDonald's Chicken Nuggets (a favourite).
Week 3: After 3 weeks, all my doubts and scepticism
vanished! I am down 2 dress sizes after losing another
3 kilos. A total of 10.5 kilos I have loads of energy.
Quite often, around the third week of diets, you tend
to run out of steam. But with the Trim and Mandura Beverage
my energy levels haven't dipped and remain steady throughout
the day. I no longer need an energy boost around 3pm
in the afternoon! I notice that my digestion is improved.
No bloating or flatulence.
Week 4: After the fourth week, my final results
were fabulous. I lost an unbelievable 12.5 kilos since
starting the program. I have lost almost 3 dress sizes.
I'm very glad I volunteered to be the guinea pig.
On week four I lost 2 more kilos. I will continue on
the program until I lose another 2.5 kilos and then
go on maintenance. I am definitely going to continue
taking the Trim and beverage because they have so many
health benefits due to the high omegas, antioxidants
and vitamins as well as the polysaccharides that makes
me feel and look healthier. I couldn't be happier with
the results.
NB: Libby took 2 capsules of Trim and 50mls beverage
night & morning. She did not change anything else in
her routine and did not exercise. She is no longer a
chocoholic

Kickbike
- The Ultimate Training Tool: By Suzi Fischer!
As
a physiotherapist and personal trainer I always hoped
to find a training tool that would combine core strength
and stability training with cardiovascular conditioning.
Not so long ago I found the answer, it's called a kickbike.
A kickbike is a hi-tech hybrid between a scooter and
bicycle. The kickbike was designed by a Finnish doctor
who ran marathons but wanted a low-impact alternative
to running to get into shape.
These simple to operate low maintenance scooters rely
on people power with no chains, pedals, seats or gears
to worry about.
Kickbike for Fitness
The kickbike is one of the best cardio workouts available,
yet it is low impact, activates the core, switches on
stabilizers and best of all activates the gluts.
I use the kickbike for my knee rehab clients, who aren't
quite up to running, my baby-boomers who'd love to run
but now prefer low impact activities, triathletes looking
for a cross-training alternative to running and cycling.
It also gives my personal training clients a fun and
challenging alternative to running, cycling and walking.
I've even seen the injured Waratahs using the kickbike
as a cross training and rehab tool.
Activating the Gluts
As a physiotherapist and personal trainer, one of the
biggest challenges I face with clients is to make sure
they understand and can perform correct running technique.
This requires not only good control of the trunk stabilizers
but also good control of the glut muscles.
In humans the glut max is the heaviest and largest muscle
and therefore should be the single strongest muscle.
However our sedentary lifestyle often leads to poor
posture and trunk stability, lack of glut control, bad
biomechanics and consequently poor running performance.
Using a kickbike offers an easy, controlled and functional
tool for re-activating the glut muscles which are so
vital for good running technique.
How we found the Ultimate Workout?
Anyone can use and enjoy a kickbike, it's low impact
and a great running alternative for baby boomers, injured
athletes or any one wanting a change from running, cycling
or walking. Unlike cycling, kickbiking engages trunk
stabilizes and encourages neutral spine position.
All the muscle groups of running are involved, in addition
to muscles of the trunk and arms. You are able to get
a higher training heart rate with a lower rate of perceived
exertion due to the whole body workout.
For the calorie conscious, kickbiking burns more calories
than walking or cycling. But most of all kickbiking
is fun and easy to do.

While
on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside
restaurant for lunch.. After finishing their meal, they
left the Restaurant, and resumed their trip.. When leaving,
the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the
table, and she didn't miss them until they had been
driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to
the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance
before they could find a place to turn around, in order
to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.
All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic
grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded
his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive.
The more he chided her, the more agitated he became.
He just wouldn't let up for a single minute.
To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant.
As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside
to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her,
"While you're in there, you might as well get my hat
and the credit card."
