How
to Fight Off Cold & Flu: by Oxford Naturopathics!
What
to do for colds and flu!
Need
some help battling the winter bugs?
We all know the symptoms of the common cold: sneezing,
sore throat, runny nose and fever. Although these symptoms
are usually mild, colds and flu are the leading cause
of doctor visits and missed days from school and work.
Dreading the winter months?
The common cold strikes many people every year, especially
during these cold winter months. Many people often dread
the winter months, not because of the cold, windy, wet
weather, but because they suffer terribly with the symptoms
of the flu or common cold. Keeping your immune system
healthy by eating a well balanced diet and taking natural
supplements can assist your body's natural immune function
and get you through the winter months without suffering
those terrible cold and flu symptoms.
Instigators
of a weakened immune system
There
are many factors that may contribute to the weakening
of your immune system. In order to maintain a healthy
immune system you should try to minimise these factors:
o Physiological, psychological and emotional stress
o
Lack of regular exercise
o
Lack of sleep, rest and relaxation
o Poor diet
o Nutritional deficiencies
An
apple a day keeps the doctor away!
There is a lot to be said about this old saying. Maintaining
optimal nutrition is extremely important in maintaining
health, wellbeing and a balanced immune system. In order
to give your body a fighting chance against the common
cold, we suggest you follow these tips for a healthy
immune system
o Eat a balanced diet high in fibre and complex carbohydrates,
low in fat, with moderate amounts of protein. Eat fresh,
wholesome, unprocessed foods.
o
De-stress! Enjoy plenty of rest and relaxation.
o
Exercise regularly.
o
Increase water intake to six to eight glasses per day.
o Supplement your diet with recommended nutrients and
herbs.
How
can we help?
When
colds or flu strike, we recommend using natural supplements
to help support and boost your body's natural immune
function. Both the common cold and flu are caused by
viruses and what many people may not realise is that
antibiotics are not able to kill viruses; they are only
able to help with bacterial infections. Fortunately
there are herbs and nutrients that can help manage these
viral infections.
o Herbal immune booster: The following herbs have been
shown to kill the viruses which cause the common cold
and flu and are now available from us in one convenient
tablet.
o
Andrographis paniculata is an Ayurvedic herb which has
a long history of use for bacterial and viral infections.
Clinical studies have shown it can reduce the severity
and duration of the symptoms of colds and flu. Its anti-
inflammatory properties contribute to its symptom- relieving
properties.
o Picrorrhiza kurroa has been used traditionally in
Indian and Chinese Medicine to help maintain a normal
healthy immune system. It has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory
and immune-stimulating actions.
o
Sambucus nigra (Elderberry) has traditionally been used
for its anti-catarrhal and fever-reducing actions to
help relieve the symptoms of colds. It is indicated
in catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract,
such as the common cold/flu, sinusitis and recurrent
or acute coughs.
o
Nutrients for immune support: Zinc may be the most important
mineral for your immune system. Zinc deficiency may
cause a weaker immune response, predisposing you to
a more lengthy or severe cold. In fact, optimal zinc
levels have been found to inhibit the common cold virus.
Vitamin C is also important as it increases the activity
of infection fighting white blood cells. Vitamin C may
prevent the common cold as well as shorten the duration
of the symptoms. These two important nutrients for the
immune system are available from us in a pleasant tasting
powdered supplement.
So
even if it is cold and flu season again, doesn't mean
that you need to walk around with a throat that is on
fire, a seriously stuffy head and a temperature that
is through the roof. There are many natural supplements
available to help boost your immune system, and prevention
is much better than cure. Come and talk to us today
about how you can get through the winter months fit
and healthy.

What
Dogs Teach Us About Life!
"People
are born so that they can learn how to live a good life
-- like loving everybody all the time and being nice,
right?"
The Six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know
how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
*
Live simply.
* Love generously.
* Care deeply.
* Speak kindly.
* Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn
things like:
* When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
* Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
* Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in
your face to be pure Ecstasy.
* Take naps.
* Stretch before rising.
* Run, romp, and play daily.
* Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
* Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
* On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
* On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady
tree.
* When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire
body.
* Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
* Be loyal.
* Never pretend to be something you're not.
* If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
* When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close
by, and nuzzle them gently.
* ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!
Am I Eligible for Allied Health Help Through My Doctor?
by Victoria Gill from The Green Apple Wellness Centre!
Allied
Health providers are professionals who help doctors
provide the care needed for patients with chronic conditions
through Medicare funded programs eg Enhanced Primary
Care plans.
The doctor decides who is eligible for the plan based
on knowledge of the patient's history of having a chronic
condition for more than 6 months. This could be Type
2 Diabetes, osteoporosis, COPD, heart conditions, depression,
forms of arthritis, asthma etc.
An example of an effective use of the Enhanced Primary
Care (EPC) plan is the doctor's referral to the Exercise
Physiologist for three sessions and to the Dietitian
for two sessions. This enables the patient to self-manage
their condition much better, by starting an appropriate
exercise regime and a suitable diet, both tailored to
their specific needs.
At the Green Apple Wellness Centre at Bald Hills in
Brisbane, Allied Health providers i.e. Exercise Physiologists,
Dietitian and Physiotherapist have been integrated successfully
with natural therapies, Acupuncture and Remedial Massage,
and with Fitness Practices.
Victoria Gill, who has owned and managed the Green Apple
for more than 30 years has a passion for preventative
health. Coming from a family of doctors from both grandparents,
father, brothers, uncles and cousins, Victoria prefers
to focus on the other side of the medical fence by providing
physical activity and dietary opportunities for people
who want to improve their health, often on referral
from their doctor.
Victoria says, "The changes we see in people here, daily,
just makes us want to keep expanding this sort of work.
It is so rewarding!"
For more information about EPC plans and how easy it
is to enroll in a sustainable exercise program, in a
friendly, non-threatening environment with caring, professional
people, phone 07 32611249 and ask to speak to Victoria.

Are your
Tampons and Sanitary Napkins Harming You?: by the Aspley
Wellness Centre!
Ladies,
be aware of this. I received this interesting analysis
of what makes a sanitary napkin and tampon, and I get
the shivers thinking how women are regularly exposed
to hazardous elements month after month for so many
years! I will share with you the content of the email
as I have received and let you decide whether or not
there is any truth to what is said.
No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical
cancer and womb tumors.
A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado
at Boulder sent the following: 'I am writing this because
women are not being informed about the dangers of something
most of us use: tampons. I am taking a class this month
and I have been learning a lot about biology and women,
including much about feminine hygiene. Recently we have
learned that tampons are actually dangerous. I'll tell
you this - after learning about this in our class, most
of the females wound up feeling angry and upset with
the tampon industry, and I for one, am going to do something
about it To start, I want to inform everyone I can,
and email is the fastest way that I know how.
HERE IS THE SCOOP: Tampons contain two things
that are potentially harmful: Rayon (for absorbency),
and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching the products).
The tampon industry is convinced that we, as women,
need bleached white products in order to view the product
as pure and clean. The problem here is that the dioxin,
which is produced in this bleaching process, could lead
to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially
carcinogenic cancer-associated and is toxic to the immune
and reproductive systems. It has also been linked to
endometriosis and lower sperm counts for men. For both
sexes, it breaks down the immune system.
83% of adult females have infected reproductive organs
and 62% of them are caused by the use of unqualified
sanitary napkins.
In September 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) reported that there really is no set 'acceptable'
level of exposure to dioxin given that it is cumulative
and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes from
repeated contact.
Karen Couppert …'Pulling the Plug on the Tampon Industry'.
(Google this and read for yourself)
"I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a
month, for 38 menstruating years is 'repeated contact',
wouldn't you?"
Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin
because it is a highly absorbent substance. Therefore,
when fibers from the tampons are left behind in the
vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground
for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer than it
would with just cotton tampons. This is also the reason
why TSS (toxic shock syndrome) occurs.
AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:
If you ever wondered what were the ingredients that
made popular brands so 'free and light and carefree',
well here's the bit: The material that makes the pad
so paper THIN, is cellulose gel. Yeap, it's not even
cotton!
DO NOT wear the same pad for more than 3 hours of a
maximum. After this duration, the genital area is prone
to bacterial action and may result in cervical cancer
or other complications!
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached
and that are all cotton. Other feminine hygiene products
(pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are
not nearly as dangerous since they are not in direct
contact with the vagina. The pads/napkins need to stop
being bleached, but, obviously, tampons are the most
dangerous.
So, what can you do if you can't give up using tampons?
Use tampons that are made from 100% cotton, and that
are UNBLEACHED. Unfortunately, there are very few companies
that make these safe tampons. They are usually only
found in health food stores.
Aspley Wellness Centre supplies sanitary napkins that
have 0 harsh and toxic chemicals and are100% biodegradable.
There are many, many health benefits from using Winalite
pads
.The Benefit Of Anion
Anion in air is like vitamin in food, greatly benefits
people's health and everyday routine, therefore, it
is also being referred to as vitamin in air, which can
facilitate body growth and disease prevention, the benefits
are different to different organs:
To respiratory system: improves lung function. 30 minutes
after anion intake, the lung is able to inhale 20% more
oxygen and exhale 14.5% more carbon dioxide.
To cardiovascular system: significantly reduces blood
pressure, improves cardiac muscle function and nutrition,
facilitates the dilation of capillary vessel and the
rise of skin temperature.
To nerve system: energizes whole body, improves sleep
quality, eases pain and tension.
To metabolism: activates different enzymes in body,
reduces blood sugar level, cholesterol, increases blood
calcium, urine amount, increases the amount of nitrogen
and creatinine in urine, accelerates bone growth, prevents
scurvy, rachitis, vitamin insufficiency.
To blood: increases the number of white and red blood
cell, haemoglobin, reticulocyte, blood platelet, globin,
heightens PH reading, shortens blood forming time.
To immune system: improves reflex system and endothelial
system, enhances body's anti-disease ability.
Comfort-Level
Compare to traditional chemical fibre surface or rough
cotton surface, "love moon" sanitary napkin's surface
is made from cotton that are softer, thinner and more
comfortable.
Air-Permeability The base of "love moon" anion
sanitary napkin is permeable to air but not to water,
the hygienic level is greatly enhanced as a result,
compare to the traditional air and water impermeable
plastic base, "love moon" leaves no room for bacteria
multiplication and gynaecological diseases.
Water-Absorbing-Ability
The surface of "love moon" anion sanitary napkin can
absorb twice as much as the amount of fluid traditional
sanitary napkin can. Sufficient crystal-like particles
could hold the penetrated water in, instead of let them
side leak or back flow.
For information about safe Sanitary Napkins please don't
hesitate to call me. (07) 3862 8818

Nourishing Your Relationship: by Clayfield Counselling!
Do
you remember the magic of a new relationship, how the
days seemed brighter just because you would see the
other person when you finished work. Many have termed
this time the "honeymoon period", a time when the needs
of the other person are paramount to your own. But gradually
along the way life has a habit of taking over, other
priorities take its place work, children and unfortunately
the relationship gets less and less attention. Till
one day arguments start over the smallest of issue and
people grow apart. Open communication:
The following scenario highlights the importance of
communicating openly and honestly without the fear of
upsetting the other person.
John and Mary have been dating for 12 months and are
going to move in with one another. However when Mary
sees some of John's furniture, she tells him that he
cannot bring that "monstrosity" into the house. The
item she is talking about a chest that John inherited
from his grandfather and whilst it isn't beautiful it
serves a function and means a great deal to him. But
he compromises and gets rid of the chest, because he
loves Mary and wants her to be happy. A relatively minor
incident one might say, however a few years later John
and Mary start fighting and John utters "you always
make me get rid of the things in my life which are important
to me, like the chest I inherited from my grandfather".
You see there were a number of mistakes made during
this scenario: John never told Mary the history behind
the chest and Mary failed to compromise on the issue.
A touch of paint and some tender loving care and the
chest could have worked in well with the other furniture.
John and Mary made a mistake in not communicating with
one another, had they been able to talk openly with
one another a compromise that suited both of them could
have been reached.
Other simple ways to improve and nourish your relationship
are as follows,
Greeting one another at the door,
Saying good morning when we wake up and good night when
we go to sleep,
Leaving notes for one another to find in the morning
or after a long day at work,
Calling to say hello and especially if one of us will
be late,
Not going to bed angry,
Hugs, kisses, and smiles throughout the day
These ideas sound simple enough, but most people make
the mistake of over analysing the problem when it is
often the simplest solution that works a treat.
If you and your partner are experiencing difficulties,
relationship counselling is a simple alternative that
can offer useful strategies to utilise in your relationship.

Painting
the Church
There was a Scottish painter named Smokey Macgregor
who was very interested in making a penny where he could,
so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee
bit further.
As it happened, he got away with this for some time,
but eventually a Catholic Church decided to do a big
restoration job on the outside of one of their biggest
buildings.
Smokey put in a bid, and, because his price was so low,
he got the job.
So he set about erecting the scaffolding and setting
up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry
to say, thinning it down with turpentine..
Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting away,
the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a
horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and the
rain poured down washing the thinned paint from all
over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold
to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded
by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint.
Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from
the Almighty, so he got down on his knees and cried:
"Oh, God, Oh God, forgive me; what should I do?"
And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke..
"Repaint! Repaint!
And thin no more!"
