Keeping Kids Well Hydrated : by Sharon Natoli!
The recent focus on childhood obesity has turned much
of the nation's attention to what kids should and shouldn't
be eating and how active they are. However something
that is equally important for children's health and
wellbeing, though often overlooked, is the importance
of hydration.
Keeping kids well hydrated is essential for good health
overall, as studies show that dehydration in children
can make it harder for them to perform well and learn
at school 1. However children often don't drink enough
to meet their fluid needs, even when drinks are freely
available 2, which means they can be more vulnerable
to heat stress. Children also have a different body
composition to adults and are not as efficient at regulating
their body temperature 1 making them even more susceptible
to dehydration.
Kids will often wait until they are thirsty before they
get a drink, or rely on others to provide them with
drinks, and by this stage they may have already lost
important fluids and electrolytes. Children who are
overweight have a higher proportion of body water, so
it is especially important that they drink regularly,
particularly kilojoule free fluids such as Neverfail
springwater, to stay adequately hydrated 3.
Childhood is a time of growth and development, and it
is also the time when kids learn lifelong eating and
drinking habits from their families and friends. So
to make sure your kids get plenty of fluids each day,
and help them recognise the importance of drinking from
an early age, always pack a water bottle in their lunchbox
and offer milk and lightly flavoured, low sugar beverages
for variety and interest. The Dietary Guidelines for
Children and Adolescents in Australia recommend to "Choose
water as a drink"4 and together, water and milk are
recommended as the best fluids for children.

Caring For Yourself During Pregnancy: with Merendi Health
Fitness Rehabiltation!
Caring for yourself during pregnancy Pregnancy brings
about a period of rapid development, hormonal changes,
laxity of connective ligaments, and shifting of weight-bearing
structures, which may cause pregnant women to experience
low back pain.
Besides helping to relieve the discomfort many expectant
mothers experience, exercise can help improve your general
fitness and prepare you for birth. This is an important
component of overall good health. The benefits of a
specially designed exercise program for pregnant women
may also be noticed during delivery. Improving the stability
of the pelvis and surrounding musculature may assist
in an easier delivery for both mother and baby. Modifications
of exercises can be made during each stage of pregnancy.
To support the stability of the spine our body uses
both passive (ligaments, discs) and active (muscles,
tendons) structures. In order to help prevent and manage
your back pain appropriate exercises can be used to
help these structures better support the spine. A balanced
exercise program should include exercises from the following
fitness areas: cardiovascular, strength and flexibility.
These exercises can be modified to ensure you and your
baby are safe while you exercise. An Exercise Physiologist
can prescribe these exercises to help you relieve and
better manage your back pain symptoms. The benefits
of exercising for back pain during pregnancy include;
" Reduced back pain symptoms
" Improve strength and condition of supporting structures
" Improve posture, body mechanics and body awareness
" Decrease fatigue and boost energy levels
" Contribute to an easier labour, delivery and post-partum
recovery
So there is no excuse for not exercising just because
you are expecting. You are most certainly able to continue
with your current exercise regime and have modifications
made to ensure you and your baby remain safe when exercising.
If you are looking to commence exercise for the first
time when pregnant you need to have a medical check
up with your treating medical practitioner first, then
you must consult with a health and fitness professional,
such as an Exercise Physiologist who can design an exercise
program specific for your individual and pregnancy needs.
Looking
for a fun yet professional approach to fitness, without
the pressure of an impersonal gym environment? We believe
that exercise - whether it's one-on-one or in a group
situation - should be fun, safe and geared towards results.
You need someone who can offer you guidance, support,
advice and most importantly - motivation - to help you
achieve the results you want! * We have an exercise
program for everyone, regardless of your fitness level!
We offer tailored programs for people with special health
conditions including pregnancy and post-pregnancy, diabetes,
heart conditions, asthma and injury rehabilitation.

your success,

What is my present state? Where am I in relation to
my desired outcome?
2. What is not perfect yet?
3.
What is preventing me from achieving my desired outcome?
4.
What am I willing to do to achieve my desired outcome
5. What am I not willing to do to achieve my desired
outcome?
6.
How can I do what is necessary to achieve my desired
outcome & enjoy the process? --

The Nourisher Meets The Time Bandit!
The
Nourisher Meets The Time Bandit Published by Joanne
Hay,
Yesterday
I saw a friend at the organic butcher. I haven't seen
her for some time, she lives in the next town. She said
"I'm really busy but I don't seem to be getting anywhere."
I commiserated but noted, "I sometimes think that but
when I look back on what I've achieved over the last
few years, I'm astounded. I think our spirits are so
enthusiastic and so deeply desire to give our gift to
the world, we feel pushed to make it happen sooner rather
than later." This got me thinking though. Am I being
as productive as I can be? Am I managing my time well?
(a question that haunts me often) Am I giving my gift
as well as I could?..

For
a Good Cause: Why Support Youngcare!
So
what does it mean to be young? It’s the feeling that
anything is possible. It’s about unlimited potential.
What might be or who might be. Being all you can, looking
forward not back. It’s about choosing your path and
following your heart. Chasing your dreams and feeding
your spirit. Being young means having a lifetime of
experiences, moment, discoveries and memories in front
of you instead of behind you. In short it feels nothing
having lived a full life.
