Modalities

Acupuncture is one of the foundations of Traditional Chinese and Oriental Medicine, using very fine sterile, disposable needles to stimulate specific points of the body. The basis of acupuncture is to harmonise the flow of Qi energy and Blood throughout the body. By stimulating acupuncture points along the energetic pathways or meridians, we improve this flow in order to enhance and maintain optimum balance and health. Acupuncture is effective for all physical, emotional and energetic imbalances and has a proven history, of over five thousand years, of this effectiveness in treating many health conditions and illnesses. Some of the conditions that acupuncture is effective for include -

• Stress and Emotional Exhaustion
• Headaches and Migraine
• Digestive disorders
• Insomnia and Sleep Conditions
• Back and Neck Pain
• Low immunity and Allergies
• Arthritis and Joint Disorders
• Autoimmune Conditions
• Fertility Issues and Pregnancy Support
• Musculoskeletal Imbalances
• Sciatica
• Sporting Injuries and Performance Enhancement

Moxibustion is a fundamental treatment tool in traditional acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The name for acupuncture, in Chinese Zhenjiu or Japanese Hari-kyu, literally translates as needle/moxa therapy. There are a number of different tools and methods we use in Moxibustion, but in all approaches, the herb Artemesia Vulgaris, is used to warm the acupuncture points, or meridians, to promote Blood circulation.
Traditionally moxa is used for conditions which appear at a more physical, tissue level in the body and has been used very successfully to treat joint pain and inflammation, typically experienced by people with arthritis, bursitis or overuse injuries, but it is also used to help turn a baby in breech position during pregnancy. It has a very important role in the treatment and maintenance of stress and emotional/mental health conditions and the soothing smell of the burning herb has a very calming effect on the psyche. Some of the many conditions which can benefit from Moxibustion include -

• Join pain and inflammation
• Acute muscles strains and knots
• Fertility and Gynaecological health
• Menstrual pain, discomfort and irregularity
• Immune function disorders
• Digestive disorders
• Preparation for labour and birth
• Stress, anxiety and depression
• Chronic sinus conditions and Hayfever
• Children's health maintenance

Shonishin, or ’Children’s needle therapy,‘ is a unique and subtle treatment method for all ages, from newborns to toddlers and older children. The treatment involves non-insertion methods, using specialised tools, to rub, stroke, press and tap along the meridians in order to harmonise the distribution of energy throughout the body. In younger children the acupuncture points aren't fully developed, so we concentrate more on the distribution of energy throughout the meridians, rather than concentrating on specific points, as we would for adults. We rarely use needles in this style of treatment and when needles are used, they are extremely fine, high quality needles, which are used to lightly contact the surface of the skin or very shallowly insert. One of the main focuses of treatment is to apply pain-free techniques which help to harmonise the child's energy and frequently children will become very calm and relaxed. It is very different to what many people would expect from acupuncture, yet these subtle techniques can have very profound effects.

This 250-year-old method effectively combines traditional oriental techniques with a gentle Japanese style of massage and actually looks much more like massage than acupuncture. The tools that we use are also made from different metals such as gold, silver, copper, bronze, titanium and steel and these different metals will have a different affect on the circulation of Blood and energy in the body. Occasionally we will use other techniques, such as light moxibustion, to gently warm the acupuncture points.

Specialised diagnostic methods are used to assess the child, allowing for the difficulties in communicating effectively with infants and young children. Since the techniques are so light, subtle and easy to learn we will often demonstrate simple practices for parents to apply at home. This gives many people a very positive sense of participating directly in the improved health of their children.

Sports and Remedial Massage are used to treat acute or chronic conditions. Sports massage can be used to maintain peak performance and we have specific approaches for pre or post-event, sports injury management and increasing strength and endurance. When combined with acupuncture it is a very effective technique for the serious and motivated sportsperson.

I emphasise the balance of whole body systems when using Remedial Massage, rather than just concentrating on one specific problem. Generally, if there is a problem in one part of the body there will be an imbalance in other parts. Over the course of treatment we can determine underlying conditions which may have lead to the current problem and work on strategies to help eliminate or harmonise the underlying imbalances, as well as treating the current problems.

Deep Tissue Therapy releases deep and longstanding blockages throughout the body. It helps alleviate physical and emotional stresses by releasing deep connective tissue strains. The main focus of Deep Tissue therapy is the release of myofascial holding patterns, experienced as a result of structural, postural or visceral imbalances. By working at a deep fascia level, we aim to improve the function and elasticity of the connective tissues of the body and release deep seated tensions and adhesions.

The connective tissue, or Fascia, is an important communication network within the body, constantly processing information and communicating between the most superficial layers of the skin and tissues beneath, to the deepest cellular levels and to the brain and nervous system. When there are obstructions in this communication system health imbalances will occur and the release of these obstructions, using deep friction and myofascial release techniques, helps to bring the body back into balance.

One common misconception concerning Deep Tissue therapy is that it is painful or uncomfortable, however when performed well it can have a very deep, relaxing effect.

Sotai Structural Balance is a Japanese form of muscular movement therapy and provides a method for neuromuscular re-education which promotes healing in the circulatory, nervous, endocrine and energetic systems by untwisting muscular holding patterns.

The underlying principles of Sotai return natural body alignment by working with the breath and moving joints in a comfortable, natural way away from pain. Sotaï uses this natural movement away from pain to help rebalance the body. While we promote a movement away from a painful position we work with the clients breathing and at the end of the comfortable range of movement we place a small amount of resistance at the final stage of the out-breath and then ask for total relaxation. As the body relaxes a large amount of blood is shunted into the injured area, nourishing the tissues and clearing metabolic wastes. The resistance at the end-of-range position also helps to "turn off" a hyper stimulated nervous system, which over stimulates the nerves that cause muscle contraction and imbalanced holding positions. Dr Hashimoto, the inventor of this system, also used the principles behind kinesiology and biomechanics to develop his treatment approach.

As well as using this method of structural balance I also use approaches which I have learnt from over twenty years of Martial Arts, Taiji and Qigong. We will look at strategies to help you appreciate the natural balance within your body and find postural habits which lead to imbalances and poor health. We will also use the bio-mechanics and bio-energetics of your body to enhance optimum health and performance and learn how to maintain balance by using stretching, strengthening and specialised Sotai techniques. We cannot have ideal health without postural balance and we cannot appreciate our energetic potential without optimum health.

Chinese Massage and Shiatsu are derived from Traditional Chinese and Oriental Medicine and follow the same principles as acupuncture. By using manual techniques we can improve the circulation of Qi in the meridians and restore health to the body.

Tuina is a relatively firm technique, which is especially effective for stubborn, chronic conditions. By using more tonic and dynamic hand techniques and stretches we can alleviate pain and restore balance.

Shiatsu uses more direct finger and hand pressure along the acupuncture points and meridians, with specialised stretching techniques which open up the flow of Qi and Blood in the meridians and alleviates blockages accumulated from poor posture and lifestyle choices. It is a very relaxing technique which leads to greater flexibility and general wellbeing.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is aimed at restoring fluid balance and metabolism throughout the body. It is used in cases of fluid retention, weight gain and toxicity and is a very important technique in treating problems associated with post-operative/post-chemo/radio therapy oedema. It is also one of the best supportive treatments to use in detox programs which aim at clearing waste and toxins at a deep cellular level.
